HEPES is used in molecular biology research as buffer for protein extraction, DNA extraction and denaturing RNA gel electrophoresis to control the pH. Also, HEPES is a more effective buffering agent for maintaining enzyme structure and function at low temperatures.
HEPES is a zwitterionic biological buffer, which functions over a pH range of 6.5 to 8.5, specially tested and certified to be free of DNase, RNase and protease activity for molecular biology application. Solutions prepared with HEPES are strongly advised to keep protected from light.
